Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur, organized important cancer awareness initiatives focusing on Women Onco Imaging during 2023 and Lung Malignancy screening through Low Dose CT (LDCT) during 2024. These programmes emphasized the importance of preventive imaging, early diagnosis, and public awareness in cancer care.
In 2023, the Women’s Imaging – Breast Cancer Awareness programme was conducted under the banner of the Indian Radiological & Imaging Association (IRIA). The academic meeting included expert lectures on breast cancer imaging, BI-RADS reporting, surgical expectations, and multidisciplinary cancer management. The initiative highlighted the vital role of radiology in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Dr. S. Shanmuga Jayanthan, Consultant and Head of Radiology & Imaging Sciences, Meenakshi Hospital, played a major role in organizing and leading the programme. He also served as a member of the National Committee of IRIA on Cancer Awareness & Imaging.
In 2024, during the International Day of Radiology celebrations, Meenakshi Hospital successfully conducted a landmark LDCT Lung Cancer Screening record attempt. Under the guidance of Dr. S. Gurushankar, Chairman of Meenakshi Hospital, the radiology team screened 46 high-risk individuals within one hour using Low Dose CT, highlighting the importance of LDCT in early lung cancer detection.
In recognition of these outstanding contributions, Dr. S. Shanmuga Jayanthan received a Certificate of Appreciation from IRIA Headquarters for his meritorious services in cancer awareness and imaging. The LDCT screening initiative also received recognition from the Asia Book of Records for the successful record achievement during 2024.
