Step 01

A thin catheter is inserted through a small puncture (usually in the groin) and guided to the blocked artery.
Peripheral angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked arteries in the legs (or arms) caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD). A balloon is used to widen the artery and a stent may be placed to keep it open and improve blood flow.

A thin catheter is inserted through a small puncture (usually in the groin) and guided to the blocked artery.

A balloon is advanced to the narrowed segment and inflated to widen the artery.

If needed, a stent (a small metal mesh tube) is placed to keep the artery open.

The catheter and balloon are removed. The stent remains in place, keeping the artery open and restoring blood flow.
